While everyone’s been raving about Prabal Gurung’s Adirondacks-inspired collection this week, with those cozy sweaters and outrageously crafted furs, I’ve been thinking about the shoes.
The reason is Nicole Kidman.
At the Grammy Awards two weeks ago, she appeared in David Koma’s grommet dress for Mugler, but her shoes caught my attention, too. A pair of black suede and patent leather pumps with straps across the front, they were from Gurung’s pre-fall collection. I asked him about the shoes, and it turns out like many New York designers, he’s making them a priority as he builds his business.

Take a look at the shoes in his fall collection—booties and pumps that feature sharp criss-cross straps (pictured, below). Their not overstated, just clean and classy, in great colors. So I thought I would share a few comments from Gurung:
Why did you decide to focus on shoes?
We’ve been working on developing footwear for some time. After a few years of collaborating with Casadei, we really learned a lot about what goes into the design and development. We took the last few seasons to refine our aesthetic and after launching with a few styles for spring, we wanted to up the offering for fall. We’ll have everything from flats to over-the-knee boots and we couldn’t be happier with the final product.
What’s so great about feet?
They get you where you need to be! And with the right shoe you can strengthen a look entirely.

What’s the secret to a great shoe design?
Quality is something that is of huge importance in everything we do. With quality comes a certain level of comfort and you want your shoes to be wearable and stylistically interesting. It’s really about finding that balance.
How did you get Nicole Kidman into your shoes?
We worked with Nicole’s stylist on that. It was the first time we’ve had a red carpet moment with just our shoes as opposed to a whole look. It’s exciting.
