Like clockwork, a deep, wine-toned lip becomes our go-to look every fall, and fall 2015 will be no exception as evidenced by the rich Bordeaux hues adorning models’ pouts at Marchesa and Alice + Olivia among many other New York Fashion Week shows. In contrast to last year’s hue, the updated shade is taking on a more inky appearance, with dark eggplant and brown undertones replacing the standard reds.
“We were going for a ’20s, Great Gatsby-inspired feeling—the clothes are so beautiful, you actually need to be able to wear makeup with clothes like that,” says Marchesa lead makeup artist Gucci Westman, who lined each model’s lips with Revlon‘s Raisin ($9; ulta.com) and followed with the lipstick in Black Cherry ($3; ulta.com). “It depends on the skin tone, I sometimes switch it out for Chocolate ($9; ulta.com) if it’s more flattering.Though a matte lip was worn for the show, a touch of gloss at the very center can impart a patent leather effect for extra dimension if a more modern appearance is what you want. “Every time I do a glossy lip, I only do the center section—never the full mouth for shows, because that’s a disaster if it starts bleeding,” Westman adds. “It photographs as a fully-glossy mouth, even if you just apply it in the center.”
