Our love for Reese Witherspoon knows no bounds—in addition to her hilarious cameo with Sofia Vergara at the MTV Movie Awards last night, the star won big in the style department in her graphic black and white number by Mugler, which was contrasted by a sexy, smoldering eye and pop of color lip. No surprise here: The look translates just as well into the real world, and her makeup artist Molly Stern gave us the complete how-to!
“Getting Reese ready for the 2015 MTV Movie Awards was a blast. This show is the perfect venue for us, as the hair and makeup teams go a little funkier than we do for other red carpets,” she says. “For tonight’s look, I wanted the focus to be on Reese’s eyes.” To start, Stern prepped Witherspoon’s complexion with a layer of the Kiehl’s Hydro Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate ($58; kiehls.com) all over, then mixed both the light and medium hues of Kiehl’s BB Cream ($37 each; kiehls.com) to even out the star’s skin tone. “I wanted a sheer and fresh looking complexion,” she says. “This allowed her naturally great skin to shine through.”

In lieu of shading powder, Stern picked up the Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Embrace ($56; net-a-porter.com), a soft peach, to sculpt out her cheekbones, then used the Christopher Kane for Nars blush in Starscape ($30; narscosmetics.com starting April 15), which gave the apples of her cheeks a hot pink flush.
Once her glowing complexion had been set, Stern moved on to the smoked-out eye. A swipe of the Dior Fusion Mono Shadow in Mirage ($31; sephora.com) provided a neutral base for the shadow to adhere, followed by the Nars Matte Shadow in Bengali ($25; narscosmetics.com), which was blended along the upper lash line. She then used the Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Pencil in Star Black ($19; sephora.com) to trace the perimeter of each eye, and smudged out the line to soften it. “This gave a bit of a gritty edge to her otherwise fresh look,” Stern adds. With a few pumps of the lash curler and two coats of DiorShow Iconic Overcurl Mascara ($29; sephora.com) topping off the eyes, the pro moved on to Witherspoon’s airy, melon-tinted lip. Stern set the base color with Laura Mercier’s Paint Wash in Coral Reef ($28; nordstrom.com), and swept the ColourPop Gloss Stick in Juicy ($5; colourpop.com) to make the shade extra-bold.
