Want an apple so tempting even Snow White can’t pass it up? Caramel apples are a long-standing Halloween favorite, but gilded apples, like this version from Style Me Pretty Living, are lent an extra spookiness that we’re sure the Evil Queen would approve of.
Halloween may be synonymous as the most sugar-filled night of the year, and while this treat isn’t totally guilt-free, the fiber and vitamins in apples make it a healthier alternative to most treats, and pack less fat than caramel-coated apples. For a head start on the night, Abby Larson, founder of Style Me Pretty, says, “Make these festive treats ahead of time – they can be made up to 6 hours before serving – and you’ll have one less stress as party time draws near.” Want an extra spooky effect? Swap skewers for twigs and insert into the stem.
Gilded Black Candy Apples
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Total time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
¾ cup water
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1 ¼ tsp cinnamon
6 (8- or 10-inch) wooden skewers
6 red apples
Edible gold glitter stars
Metallic gold paint
Paintbrush
Wax paper
Cooking oil spray
Candy thermometer
Directions:
1. Paint wooden skewers gold, excluding the last 2 inches towards the pointed end (which will be inserted in the apples).
2. Spray wax paper with cooking oil spray and set aside. Insert the sticks into the apples.
3. Combine sugar, water, corn syrup, black good coloring, and cinnamon in a saucepot. Insert a candy thermometer. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium-high. Boil until the mixture reaches 300°F, about 15 minutes. Remove from heart.
4. Immediately dip the apples into the syrup, swirling the apple around until all sides are covered. Place the candied apples onto the papered wax paper and sprinkle with gold glitter. Apples can be made up to 6 hours in advance of serving.
