Was Hot Then: April 2010

By: Leah Abrahams

Flashback! Each Friday, we’re taking a look back at the trends, beauty, music, and cover stars that were all the rage in years past. This week: Get nostalgic for April 2010 as we reminisce about Gossip Girl beauty, Rihanna’s chart-topper, the sandals that just wouldn’t quit, and more.

Most-Wanted Beauty Look: “The Serena” from Gossip Girl
The teen drama series starring Upper East Side socialites was one of its kind, and the beauty looks were no exception: Not since Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel cut had there been a more desirable ‘do. From Tampa to Tulsa, salons reported that Blake Lively’s golden-beige strands were the most in-demand style. The key components? Angled chin-length layers and apricot low-lights (created for the star by on-set stylist Jennifer Johnson).

 Déjà vu: Grecian Sandals
Rising temps means sandal season, and the deity-derived metallic footwear trend named after the ancient Greeks graced the pages of our April 2010 issue. Look familiar? The trend lives on (as seen on the Spring 2015 runways), but goes by the Roman-inspired name of gladiator sandals–a modern take that’s as pretty as it is powerful.

On Our iPods: “Rude Boy” By Rihanna
The third single from the Barbadian singer’s album Rated R peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for the entire month of April, and it’s easy to see why—the hit’s up-tempo sound pairs perfectly with Rihanna’s icy pitch.

Moment in Time: Angie & The Twins
Scene-stealers! The world was treated to a rare sighting of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s adorable 19-month-old twins, Vivienne and Knox, on a Palazzo in Venice, Italy.

InStyle Cover Girl: Gwen Stefani
The megawatt singer and L.A.M.B. designer sat down with us in April 2010 to dish on motherhood, designing, and her signature red lip. “I have to be creative to be happy,” Stefani told us. As for why she started designing? “I wanted so badly to have a backup plan for when I’m not performing anymore,” she said. “Let’s be realistic: it’s not going to be like this forever. So I wanted to continue having something creative to do. I don’t have a strong sense of self-worth unless I’m doing something.”
