Whether she’s hitting the streets or the red carpet, Jamie Chung rarely misses an opportunity to show off her signature bold lip. (We’re hoping it might even make an appearance at her upcoming fall wedding). But rather than choose between shades of red or orange for a recent event, the star opted for the best of both worlds with a subtle ombré effect.

The two-tone technique helps fake a fuller pout, and it’s quite easy to master with just a bit of practice. First, makeup artist Kira Nasrat prepped Chung’s lips with a moisturizing balm (she loves By Terry Baume de Rose, $60; barneys.com). After blotting away the excess, she turned to Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Liner in Red 8C ($19; sephora.com). “I lined the lips with the red lip liner and blended it with a lip brush to make it diffused—but not in the center of lips,” she tells InStyle.
Next, using the same brush, Nasrat applied Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick in Brat Pack ($50; ulta.com) over the liner. “The trick is to dab it on rather than brush it on,” she says. She then stippled Tom Ford Lip Color in Wild Ginger ($50; nordstrom.com) in the center of the star’s lips, targeting it more toward the bottom half than the top to amplify the trompe l’oeil effect. The final steps? “Blend the edges of the brighter lipstick so it looks diffused,” she says. After pressing her lips together a couple times, Chung was set.
