This season, The Good Wife’s costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.
Season 6 of The Good Wife premiered last night, and Julianna Margulies as the kick-butt lawyer Alicia Florrick is b-a-c-k.
The actress’s Emmy-winning role is one that exemplifies powerful women who work on television, and finding outfits for her is not an easy task. “One of the great challenges is finding suiting for women that is appropriate for a law office or court, that looks elegant, and has a feminine quality to it,” the show’s costume designer Dan Lawson tells InStyle. That’s why he picked this Andrew Gn design for her trip to the courtroom, which he describes as “a man’s suit with a decidedly feminine flare.” The reason it works is because the suit’s color counterbalances the bright white lapels. “The white lapels and exaggerated shoulders frame the face beautifully, which emphasizes power and intelligence,” Lawson says.
Your tip: Try a contrasting lapel this week like Alicia Florrick. “When shopping for business wear, don’t feel like you have to do a masculine suit to fit in with the men,” says Lawson. “The white lapel and white top of the dress even give a nod to a man’s white dress shirt, but in a feminine form.”
