We’ve lost count of the times we were fashionably late because we just had to create a precise cat-eye, which is why we’re especially excited about the blocked liner trend seen at the New York Fashion Week shows for Suno and Badgley Mischka. The effect has the same upward flick as our standard look, but rather than a wing so sharp it could stab someone, the eyeliner was blocked off at the edges to create an almost-rectangular shape.
To create the look at Badgley Mischka, lead makeup artist Tom Pecheux began with a sweep of MAC’s Fluidline in Blacktrack ($16; maccosmetics.com) along the base of the upper lashes, then extended the line past the edge of the eye. “We create a wing, but not a pointy one. It’s a square wing, then we go over the top with an ink blue color that we mixed backstage,” he tells us. “We wanted the girl to be a little bit of a rebel; When we were creating the look with the Badgley Mischka designers, we said it’s a girl from the Upper East Side who goes out for a crazy night in the East Village.”When taking the look from the runway into real life, Pecheux advises making the bottom strike closest to the lashes the longest, then following with the deep blue hue over the top—try using a navy liquid liner or a wet shadow for a similar effect. Of course, if you prefer a more minimalist vibe, pick up a liquid liner and try your hand at the graphic block at Suno. Though the wing looks precise, you can taper any smudges to a square using a pointed cotton swab dipped in eye makeup remover.
