Iris Apfel isn’t your average 93-year-old. In fact, the White House interior designer turned style icon is quite possibly more relevant than ever. As the subject of the last documentary by the late Albert Maysles, the filmmaker behind Grey Gardens and Gimme Shelter, her presence, flair, and wisdom is palpable even in the two-minute trailer for the film.
In the preview, we see her playing around with piles of costume jewelry, being interviewed by Tavi Gevinson, schmoozing with Alexander Wang, and of course, talking about style. “I don’t have any rules because I would only be breaking them, so it’s a waste of time,” she say in trailer. It’s a sentiment that she echoed in a recent interview with InStyle‘s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson. “I don’t even like to think about what I’m wearing. It’s just that if it feels good in the pit of my tummy, then I know it’s right,” she tells Wilson. “Too many people take themselves too seriously and that’s very bad.” Fashion advice to live by.
