As the wise men of Poison once sang, “Every rose has its thorn.” So too does every piece of must-have jewelry this season.
“Thorns can be dramatic but poetic at the same time,” says French designer Aurelie Bidermann, who worked the little points into an 18kt gold wraparound ring for her Rosebud collection. Inspired by paintings of flowers, Bidermann says that it was natural for her to focus directly on the thorns when it came to her design process. “I was drawn to using the stem instead of the rosebud, because I just found it more interesting,” she says.RELATED: A Fresh Take on Pearl Jewelry
And there’s more to the trend than simply looking sharp. “Thorns can take on many different meanings,” says Bidermann. “They participate in the beauty of roses, but at the same time they can hurt us.” Don’t worry, though—these pricks aren’t dangerous. They have rounded edges so as not to poke you, snag your clothes, or break your heart. See our picks to start a spiked stem collection of your own.
