If anyone knows a thing or two about rocking a bold lip, it’s Janelle Monáe. The singer stayed true to her signature red shade for her performance at the Essence Music Festival over the holiday weekend—and the best part is, you won’t have to splurge to wear the exact same one.
“Janelle’s signature red lip is the perfect accent to this classic look,” makeup artist and CoverGirl ambassador Sam Fine tells us.
To make a statement, Fine relied on two beauty bargains from the brand itself: After applying LipPerfection Lipcolor in Hot ($7; ulta.com), he added a dab of Colorlicious Lipgloss in Sweet Strawberry ($6; target.com) for dimension and shine.When trying out the look, take a cue from Monáe and let your lips take center stage with minimal (but not too bare) eye makeup. “Using Bombshell Intensity Liner ($9; drugstore.com) in black, I drew a thick line that winged out to elongate the eye, then topped it off by adding false lashes and a few coats of Clump Crusher by LashBlast mascara ($8; ulta.com) to both top and bottom lashes.”
