Presidential Style: Michelle Obama Bridges the U.S. and Japan with One Dress

Now this is what you call first-class style. Michelle Obama touched down in Tokyo and made a beyond chic—not to mention, pretty unforgettable—first impression.

For her first visit to Japan, the First Lady went for a radiant lime green graphic-print Kenzo flared frock that she accessorized with a waist-cinching futuristic mirrored belt and classic black pumps.

Obama is often lauded for her on-point sartorial choices, but this one—with its blend of effortless cool and progressive design—especially stood out as a winner.

But let’s hone in on this dress. Aside from making a bold statement, its message runs much deeper—it symbolically bridges the U.S. and Japan. Kenzo is a French fashion house that was founded by Japanese designer Kenzo Takada, but its creations today are designed by the American dream team Humberto Leon and Carol Lim. How poetic, right?

But it’s not just the dress that epically boasts Japanese-American elements. Obama revealed on Instagram that the purpose of her trip is an announcement of a partnership between the United States and Japan to educate girls worldwide #LetGirlsLearn.

Konichiwa, Tokyo! The First Lady is starting her trip in Japan — because this week, the United States and Japan will announce a new partnership to educate girls worldwide. #LetGirlsLearn
