Bright Stripes! Spring 2015 Sees the Pattern in Practically Every Shade of the Rainbow

Stripe on! The classic print got a cheery makeover during spring/summer 2015 shows at New York Fashion Week. But instead of la mariniere, or nautical, lines in standard navy blue and white, designers have striped their runway looks in practically every shade of the rainbow. There’s nothing uniform about them, either.

These ones are coming from all directions at different widths and in refreshingly vibrant hues.

Felipe Oliveira Baptista, the creative director of Lacoste, gave stripes a sporty-cool update with chunky bands in burgundy and white, altering the alignment and adding an unexpected dash or persimmon orange for a graphic, modern effect (above, left). At DKNY, Donna Karan coupled a hodgepodge of shades together, like yellow, aqua-blue, and red, into surprisingly cohesive coordinates (above, center). Brandon Sun manipulated red and teal stripes, spacing them out or clumping them together, to form geometric shapes (above, right).

Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis of Suno offset sweet pastels with neon-bright lines all over boxy jacquard jackets, calf-length skirts (above, left), and dresses, while Peter Som gave sharply tailored pieces, like a waistcoast (above, right) an offbeat edge with eclectic stripes.
