If there’s a drink that deserves to be the official sip of the summer, it’s the piña colada. One taste of the fruity island treat and we’re instantly transported from happy hour to a sandy beach on a hot July day. It’s (almost) as good as a vacation day.
The piña colada has been the official drink of Puerto Rico, it’s birthplace, since 1978.
A heated debate echos across the island between resort mixologists about who exactly invented the modern version of the summertime sip.Instant Tip!
Happy Piña Colada Day! We’re toasting with a strawberry version of the pirate-invented drink!Tweet This!
The oldest origin story of the cocktail dates back to the 1800s and involves an outlaw pirate. According to legend, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí (aka “El Pirata Cofresí”) would boost his crew’s morale by serving them a drink containing coconut, pineapple, and white rum—a recipe which would eventually become the piña colada as we know it.
One thing’s for sure—we’ll take any excuse we can to mix a batch of the tropical cocktails and today’s the perfect day for it: it’s Piña Colada Day!
For Piña Colada Day, we suggest celebrating with a three-ingredient version of the classic cocktail: the Ménage à Colada. Smooth strawberry vodka mingles with sweet pineapple juice and a dollop of fizzy club soda makes the cocktail sparkle. Read on for the yummy recipe!
