Why Your Scalp Deserves a “Facial”

By: Sheryl George

You may not be familiar with the phrase “scalp facial,” but the idea of an exfoliating, cleansing, and treatment regimen for your head makes sense in the same way it does for your face. (Your scalp is skin, after all.) To encourage gorgeous, healthy hair, you need to get to the root of the problem, literally.

“A healthy scalp environment makes for a stronger bulb to the hair cuticle. Properly nourished, cleansed and exfoliated means healthier and stronger hair,” says celebrity hairstylist Paul Labrecque.

Step 1: Exfoliate
Just like complexions, scalps can get clogged with dead skin and buildup from products. Scrub along the roots with a wash like Kevin Murphy MAXI.WASH ($27; kevinmurphy.au), which teams up exfoliating fruit acids. An added benefit: A clean scalp better absorbs the nutrients from the treatments in the final step below.

Step 2: Cleanse
This one’s simple: Suds up with your favorite shampoo to remove any residue and buildup, working lather through to the ends.

Step 3: Treat
If you tend toward dryness, apply a hydrating mask that conditions both the scalp and strands. This mask from ReGensis ($42; revitalash.com) is formulated with moisturizing borage oil and Belarus silt, a detoxifying clay. Work the mask from root to ends and leave on for three to four minutes before rinsing.

If your scalp is feels sensitive or irritated, reach for Sachajuan Scalp Treatment ($45; barneys.com), which boosts microcirculation with ginseng and rosemary oil and reduces inflammation using ginger extract.

Already in the salon for a blowout? Why not try an add-on scalp treatment? (Someone else scrubbing your scalp feels way more indulgent than doing it yourself) Your stylist will apply products that deliver concentrated, pro-strength ingredients. We like these new services:  Kevin Murphy  Treat.ME ($20; KevinMurphy.com.au) and GROH Ergo Boost ($30; reddoorspas.com).
