It used to be the Film Independent Spirit Awards was just an appetizer for the Academy Awards— not anymore. The stars came out dressed to impress, but that’s not to say the bohemian vibe has evaporated. In fact, celebrities like Jessica Chastain, who is nominated for Best Supporting Female for her work in A Most Violent Year, seem to let loose. “I feel very ’60s! We’re at the beach— let’s get the legs out!” she told InStyle on the awards show’s red carpet tonight. In a chic black Saint Laurent minidress with lace sleeves and plenty of Piaget bracelets, Chastain was indeed airing her gams. (And toned stems at that!)

She wasn’t the only actress with a chic LBD in mind. Emma Stone chose one with bared sides by Monique Lhuillier. Scarlett Johansson donned a plunging Bec & Bridge dress (did this woman have a baby just months ago?!). Kerry Washington, meanwhile, opted for a slightly longer hemline but stuck with the noir theme in a sleeved Balenciaga with a halter neckline.

To that, Chastain, who has plenty of blockbuster-type fare under her belt, confessed she’s really a true indie at heart. Chastain said: “Independent film is where my heart lies.”
