For fall/winter 2014, we saw designers casually dip a toe into fringe, testing the waters with small-scale detailing on sweaters and skirts. But for spring/summer 2015, we’re no longer on the cusp (or should we say, fringe) of the trend—designers have taken things to a whole new frontier with fringed dresses that edge on eveningwear status.
Yes, the Western trimming has undergone a high-fashion facelift. At Proenza Schouler, designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez closed their spring/summer 2015 show with dresses and skirts spliced into unraveling strands that swished and swooshed with every single step (above, left). Designer Alberta Ferretti flashed back to the ’70s with dreamy free-spirited creations with second-skin sheer fabrics and pretty floral appliques. Amid them, suede fringe (some dyed in pastels) took over hemlines, gilets and dresses (above, center). At Elie Tahari, the designer made Bohemian modern with tiered leather shreds (above, right).
Designer Ennio Capasa of Costume National closed his show with a smoldering black one-shoulder number with a skirt made entirely of ground-grazing fringe (above, left). And Marco de Vincenzo fashioned coats, skirts and dresses from tiers of silk fringe in yellows and pinks—a playful, modern design that was reminiscent of 1920s flapper dresses (above, right).
