Who’s That Girl: FKA Twigs, the Music Industry’s Latest Fashion Darling

Here’s a name to know: FKA Twigs. Not only is the 27-year-old artist making a name for herself in the music industry, but she’s also leaving a mark on the fashion world.

Born and raised in England as Tahliah Debrett Barnett, the artist—who is of Jamaican, Spanish, and English descent—started her musical career with the moniker Twigs and added the FKA after another music act with a similar name (American pop duo The Twigs) spoke out.

Followers have ascribed the initials as standing for “formerly known as,” although FKA Twigs has said that they’re “just a collection of letters.”

The singer-songwriter, producer, and dancer dropped her first album in 2014 to glowing reviews and her enchantingly beautiful voice has an eerie-angelic edge that is recognizable within seconds. But FKA Twigs is not known for that voice alone: Her music videos, all of which she has co-directed or directed, are just as captivating. The over-the-top music videos (which make it obvious that FKA Twigs started off in the industry as a dancer) are both erotic and hauntingly cool—check out the video for her song “Pendulum,” a track off her newly released hit album LP1.

But what has captured our attention beyond the music—and reports that she’s dating Robert Pattinson—is FKA Twigs’s rapid-fire style risks. (Her avant-garde fashion choices have been compared to both Lady Gaga and Björk.)

At last week’s 2015 Brit Awards Nominations Concert in London, FKA Twigs received nominations for two awards, British Breakthrough Act and British Female Solo Artist, and performed her tracks “Hide” and “Pendulum.

” She hit the red carpet in a buzz-worthy ensemble consisting of a dramatic Aganovich jacquard number, an overload of gold jewelry by Annelise Michelson and Anabela Chan, and strappy Vivienne Westwood boots (pictured at top).

What made the look even more unique was FKA’s henna-like makeup. For her performance, FKA kept the ornate face makeup on but switched up her look, opting for a nude two-piece number (above).

Keep an eye out for this all-star. One thing’s for sure: She’ll always give us something to talk about.
