What’s Right Meow: This “Kitty Stardust” Shirt Pays Homage to David Bowie

Cat lovers, if you’re as excited as we are about all the David Bowie buzz lately (like how he’s releasing new music on his upcoming retrospective album, Nothing Has Changed), you’ll be thrilled by this: Fashion label Wren has recently teamed up with model, muse, and illustrator Langley Fox, to create a limited-edition “Kitty Stardust” charity tee inspired by the rock star to benefit No Kill Los Angeles Animal Shelters (NKLA).

The concept began shortly after Wren’s creative director Melissa Coker rescued a kitten of her own. “She’s named Turtle and is a little athlete! I began learning more about homeless cats and wanted to do something to give back. Langley has been a long time friend of the brand, and after a jag of emailing cat pictures back and forth—one thing led to another and the collaboration was born,” Choker tells InStyle.

Printed on a soft cotton T-shirt, Fox had sketched the original artwork using graphite pencil and water color to fill in the tabby’s signature Ziggy Stardust-esque lightning bolt. “I knew of David Bowie when I was younger, but it wasn’t until middle school that I really began to enjoy his music,” Fox says. “I realized how iconic he was through his appearance and waves through different genres of music.”

Fox also has a rescued cat named Jack Skellington, after the “Pumpkin King” character in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. “I fell in love with my little devil—he’s full of personality and I like to describe him as a bad boyfriend that doesn’t always do the right thing, but the minute he does something loving, you’re swooning over him again! Not to mention his dreamy good looks.

” To top it off, she rocked the tee in Wren’s “First Kiss” popular fall video ad campaign.

Also, be sure to check out the new documentary film, David Bowie Is, created by the Victoria and Albert Museum to celebrate the music icon’s career, legend, and style. It will be screened across theaters in the U.S. starting Sept. 23, in time for the coordinating exhibition opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.
