Gingham is by no means a novel print, but for spring/summer 2015, a handful of New York designers have gravitated toward the classic picnic-friendly textile, fashioning it in a way that felt fresh, new, and unexpected.
Joseph Altuzarra led the charge when he sent out gingham shirtdresses dangerously unbuttoned up-to-there (above, center). Other gingham pieces in the Altuzarra show appeared conservative at first glance, but a closer look reveals provocative slits that alluded to the sinister beauty behind his inspiration: Rosemary’s Baby and Barry Lyndon.
A day later, Diane von Fustenberg showed a far less sinister show with a line-up of French Riviera pieces (specifically, the Côte d’Azur of the ’50s) that played up the gingham print in baby-doll dresses, some infused with bold splashes of pink or canary yellow (above, left). As it just so happens, Michael Kors also looked to the ’50s for his spring/summer 2015 collection.
He channeled optimism with blooming sunflower prints (among other florals) and gingham washed in bubblegum pink (above, right).Click ahead to get up-to-the-minute info on all things NYFW.
