Goodbye Skinny Jeans! Spring 2015 Is All About ’70s Flares

So long, skinnies! For spring/summer 2015, it looks like designers are eschewing clingy, second-skin pant silhouettes in favor of bell-bottoms reminiscent of the ’70s.

Derek Lam embraced the era, committing to classic 1970s styles, from hip-hugging flared bottoms (above left) to patchwork pieces that would’ve made Joni Mitchell proud.

Stuart Vevers, the creative director of Coach, took inspiration from a road trip through iconic American references, like riveted denim from the Avedons of the American West (above, center). “I love the studded flares; they feel new and interesting,” Vevers tells InStyle. “I like the idea of referencing the familiar and the known, and presenting it again but in new, different way.” And at Diane von Furstenberg, the designer crafted flares from gingham print, a pattern that punctuated her entire collection (above, right).

Designer Giovanna Randall dialed up the drama at Honor with extreme flares that started above the knee (above, left). And Rebecca Taylor took a walk down memory lane to the late ’70s when she lived in London with her family. “My mother would take us to Portobello Market and buy the most beautiful, diaphanous Indian dresses,” she tells InStyle. With that as a starting point, she treated many of her spring 2015 pieces (flared bottoms included) to pretty paisley-print (above, right).
