Match Your Shoes to Your Dress à la Emma Stone and Rosamund Pike

When prepping for a big night out, whether it be at the Oscars, a gala, or, say your bestie’s wedding, selecting the right shoe for your look is tough. It’s not the style of shoe that can be the trickiest part, it’s finding the perfect color shoe that will accent your dress without stealing its spotlight.

Sure, there are safe go-tos, like silver, gold, black, and nude colors, but oftentimes, a basic color just isn’t satisfying. Take a cue from Rosamund Pike in Givenchy Couture (above, right) and Emma Stone in Elie Saab Couture and Christian Louboutin (above, left), both of whom walked the 2015 Oscars red carpet in heels that matched the exact color of their dresses. The pairing created a seamless look and really allowed the eye to flow from head to toe.

How to pull it off:
You want to create a monochrome look, but you want to do so subtly. For starters, choose a simple, strappy shoe. When shopping, bring your dress or a color swatch along with you so you can be sure to harmonize your colors perfectly. If your search for a matching shoe is starting to feel endless, you can always have your heels dyed—here is where a simple shoe is really necessary as you don’t want to have to dye too much fabric! (Less fabric produces a crisper dye job.) What’s nice about taking this route is that it is often less costly. Go to your nearest (trustworthy!) shoe repair store to have the job done. Tip: Be sure to wear the dyed shoes around your home before the big night as excess dye will likely rub off.
