Editor-Tested: Opening Ceremony’s MICA Smart Bracelet

We haven’t exactly been shy about our excitement over the release of Opening Ceremony and Intel’s super-sleek smart bracelet. Known as MICA (My Intelligent Communication Accessory), the high-tech device is poised to solve any and all working girl woes by syncing with your smartphone to notify you of incoming texts, Google cal alerts, and myriad social media notifications.

But most all, it just looks really, really cool.

Each of the two styles designed by OC dream team Humberto Leon and Carol Lim is composed of Ayers snakeskin and precious gems—the black version (above) is encrusted with pearls from China and lapis stones from Madagascar, and the white style features tiger’s eye from South Africa and obsidian from Russia. Suffice it to say, I couldn’t wait to see how this thing looked on my wrist.

A self-professed hater of watches, I figured I could get on board with a pretty bangle that disguises itself as a timepiece and more—especially one that’s seemingly easy to use. Fortunately, I was right. Within minutes, I had all of the features down pat, and was pleasantly surprised at how natural it felt to use. By swiping my finger to the left, I was directed toward different, inherently intuitive menus: emails and texts, complete with customizable quick replies (perfect for meetings), Google Cal and Facebook event invites, with the ability to instantly accept or reject appointments with a simple tap, Yelp, for locating nearby restaurants by swiping up or down, and even a VIP contact list for your inner circle that filters out your texts, and alerts you with vibrations when you receive them.

Perhaps best of all, the bracelet comes with two years of free AT&T data service, so, on top of everything else, I don’t need to stress about racking up additional fees on my wireless bill. As the screen displays above, the possibilities are truly endless.

Step into the new year, aka the future, by picking up MICA ($495) exclusively at Opening Ceremony (openingceremony.us) and Barneys New York (barneys.com).
