Being an international style icon has its advantages, like receiving invitations to virtually every glamorous event on the planet and reaching BFF-level status with major designers. The flip side is that you have to spend a lot of time on airplanes. Just ask Olivia Palermo, who is on track to log 400,000 air miles this year alone.
While in Mexico City on Friday to attend a gala in honor of Carolina Herrera (who helped design her wedding dress), she revealed a few of her travel secrets, and what she never leaves home without.
What do you pack for a date with Carolina Herrera?
I always pack a lot of shoes, belts, and jeans for any trip, but I love wearing Carolina Herrera. I’ve been a big supporter of hers for many years. She is elegant, timeless, classic, inspirational, and iconic.

What do you never leave home without?
My Mophie charger, my iPhone, all my Smythson cases because they keep me organized. I’m a fan of carrying bags within bags. And I like Carolina’s CH black fringe tote, because it’s lightweight so I use it a lot.
Any advice for frequent flyers?
Ziploc bags are fantastic. I love plastic baggies. For toiletries, they are perfect in case anything leaks, and you can also use them for jewelry. You should also think about restyling and working with what you have, instead of overpacking.
What kind of luggage do you use?
I cannot pack without my Rimowa suitcases. They are practical, functional and incredibly stylish.

How early do you get to the airport?
An hour-and-a-half before the flight, usually.
Do you eat in the lounge or go for the Shake Shack burger?
I don’t eat any airport food whatsoever. I only eat before I leave or after I land, which is something my mother always said. Avoid plane food. It’s disgusting.
Any favorite airline?
I only fly on two carries, Lufthansa and Swiss, and I’m on the highest status they have. I am a loyal supporter. It’s true, it’s an organic love for Lufthansa and Swiss.
What is the etiquette for being a guest of a designer on such an occasion?
A hand-written thank you note is important, and flowers to her team for all of their hard work.
First impressions of Mexico City?
I love the guacamole!
