#HowToWearIt: The Check Print

In this weekly feature, InStyle’s Senior Market Editor/Digital Correspondent Dana Avidan-Cohn shares tips and tricks on how to tackle the latest trends. Look for it on What’s Right Now every Friday and be sure to try out the trend yourself and tweet your look using #HowToWearIt.

The check is one of the most coveted prints from the spring runways, thanks to designers like Derek Lam and Carven.

With its larger scale, it reads more like a blown-out gingham and less like Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (you won’t be in braids and red shoes for this trend!). Seek out sleek combos of navy, black, and white to take the pattern into the now and pair it with a tougher shoe to offset the sweetness of the print. Try this Tanya Taylor dress ($550, avenue32.com) and Melissa sandal ($85, shopbop.com) combination (above, right).

Remember that the shapes you select are just as important as the color scheme. Try structured pieces with updated silhouettes such as a calf-skimming midi dress or skirt. Prefer an accessory? A pointy pump or even a slide for the weekend can be an unexpected touch—but again, don’t go all Dukes of Hazard and wear them with denim cut-offs. Instead, pair them with a cool, crop leg jumpsuit or a crisp white shirt dress for the office.

The best advice I can give when trying something new, don’t take unnecessary risks. Don’t run out and by a full check-print dress in bright red or yellow. Instead, ease into the look with something in a classic navy-and-white combo and you can’t miss! Shop some of my other favorite pairings below.

Zara jumpsuit, $100, zara.com, Topshop sneakers, $35, nordstrom.

com, Protagonist tank, $370, theline.com, Hallhuber skirt, $117, houseoffraser.co.uk.
