In terms of functionality, vests aren’t as practical as a coat, but they make for great season-to-season transitional pieces. But we’re not talking about sporty puffers or Chandler Bing-type sweater vests. We’re into long waistcoasts (see: Olivia Palermo and Kate Hudson, who are already fans) that inject a touch of polish when it’s too balmy for a blazer and add another layer of interest by way of color, print or texture.
And, it just so happens to be, that they were all over the spring/summer 2015 runways.Using matching fabric, Reed Krakoff fashioned a long vest, which was layered atop a coordinating asymmetric mini skirt. (above, left). The designing duo behind Rag & Bone, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, served up an utilitarian-themed collection, from camo-print windbreakers to denim-look indigo cotton pieces. The latter was found in a long vest, secured atop matching tailored trousers (above, center). And at Opening Ceremony, designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon gave the softest shade of pink a really tough spin with a cool moto vest over a printed dress (above, right).
The sleeveless topper can be worn over anything, from dresses to pants. Consider the vest an investment (surely that’s a sign) for next season and beyond.
