Why Oscar Nominee Patricia Arquette Is Bringing Her Daughter as Her Date

Actress Patricia Arquette has swept this awards season for her role as a struggling single mother in Boyhood, having won the Golden Globe, the SAG, and the BAFTA. So when it comes time at this Sunday’s Oscars for the Best Supporting Actress presenter to say, “and the award goes to…” is she confident she’ll hear her name?

“I’m trying not to think about it, frankly, too much,” she tells InStyle. “I’m still pretty mind-boggled that this is happening at all.”

If you’ve seen the film, you likely understand why audiences are reacting so well to director Richard Linklater’s 12-year tale of what it’s like to grow up. It’s hard to watch it and not find something you can relate to, either as a parent, child, or both.

“I feel really grateful that people are responding to this very human story that made them feel and communicate to each other,” Arquette says. “It’s such a beautiful thing to be part of.”

And we’re sure Arquette will look just as beautiful on the red carpet Feb. 22. Though she’s worn the likes of Escada and J. Mendel (pictured, above) in the past, this year, “my best friend is making my dress, and now my daughter is going to come so I’m just trying to figure out her dress,” she shares.

Ultimately, Arquette believes Oscar’s outcome is out of her hands (“It always is,” she says), but win or lose, she still expects it to be a special night: it’s the first time she’ll be taking 11-year-old daughter Harlow to an awards show.

“Usually I keep her away from this kind of stuff,” she says, “but I think this is a really important moment,” she says. “I’ve swung so far on the pendulum to minimize my work in the world that I think it’s nice for her to see me in a context outside of just being a mom.”
