If you missed the Super Bowl last night, here’s your excuse to queue up Katy Perry‘s stellar halftime performance before diving into all of those now-viral commercials. Not long after the star opened with “Roar” atop a massive metallic lion and sang “I Kissed a Girl” alongside Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott joined the singer for a surprise cameo to perform a trio of her most iconic hits.
Just like her showstopping performance, Perry’s beauty look proved to be just as electric as halftime itself, and we have all the details on how you can DIY the effect at home!“Katy specifically asked for the perkiest pony you’ve ever seen,” says her hairstylist Clyde Haygood, who used human hair extensions around a Velcro base to form the exaggerated effect. To ensure the updo stayed in place, Haygood sewed an elastic band on the inside of the hairpiece, and placed a toggle closure around the ponytail so it could open and close around Perry’s own hair. He then sprayed on a layer of the KMS Freeshape Styling + Finishing Spray ($20; ulta.com), and took 3-inch sections and curled them around an iron to impart an S-wave. Haygood followed by slicking the star’s hair back with the KMS Hairstay Styling Gel ($11; ulta.com), and tamed her flyaways with a small amount of the Hairplay Gel Wax ($20; ulta.com). If you’re trying this look out sans extensions, use the natural line of your cheekbone as a guide when pulling your hair back, and anchor onto your crown using an elastic similar to your own hair color. Keep the sides sleek, and wrap a tendril around the base of the style to hide your ponytail holder.

With her mile-high pony in place, Perry’s makeup artist Jake Bailey went to work crafting the ultimate gilded eye. “Katy’s performance had multiple costume changes, so I needed to create a strong look that would complement all her outfits as there was absolutely no time for a touch up between quick changes,” he says. “I decided to go with a classic Katy look—elongated cat eyes, lots of mascara, super sparkly gold and silver glitter, and a bold red lip for glamour and showmanship.” Bailey applied a layer of CoverGirl Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation in Natural Beige ($10; drugstore.com) to impart a flawless canvas, then moved on to the dramatic eye, applying a graphic wing with CoverGirl’s Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Black Onyx ($6; drugstore.com). “I painted a glitter adhesive just above the black liner, and carefully placed a mix of gold and silver glitter on top with a tiny eyeliner brush,” he says. “Then, I applied the Eye Shadow Quad in Blooming Bushes ($9; drugstore.com) to add warmth and dimension.” A few pumps of the lash curler and two coats of CoverGirl’s Full Lash bloom Mascara ($9; drugstore.com) finished the eye, and with the Clean Glow Blush in Roses ($8; drugstore.com), Bailey concentrated the lighter hue on the apples of Perry’s cheeks, then used the darker shade to contour. The statement lip tied all of the elements together. “I lined and shaped her lips using the Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Hot ($7; drugstore.com), and applied a coat of the Colorlicious Lipstick in Seduce Scarlet ($8; drugstore.com)—truly a classic red for a classic Katy look,” he says. A final layer of the Covergirl Lip Lava in Mauva Lava ($9; drugstore.com) gave off a patent leather shine that could be seen from the last row in the stadium.
