Cheers to That! Wine-Hued Lips Take Center Stage at the Oscars

Wine isn’t just for toasting the big winners at the Oscars. In place of perennial red carpet favorite—cherry red lipstick—stars like Naomi Watts, who used L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Color in Timeless Rose ($13; ulta.com), Viola Davis, and Chrissy Teigen proved a burgundy wine hue was the night’s beauty underdog, and can last well past the holidays.

The shade, which we saw both matte and saturated this past week at Alice + Olivia and Marchesa’s New York Fashion Week presentations, is adaptable to all skin tones and to the dramatically different textures of each star’s Oscar gown.

The trick to rocking a hue this bold? Whether deeply saturated (like Davis) or a more sheer coverage (like Watts) Take a cue from these ladies and let lips take center stage. To keep from looking overdone, all women kept makeup minimal, save for a hint of blush, liner along just the upper lash for Teigen and Watts, and several coats of mascara. With a hue this deep, prevent feathering by lining lips with a shade matching or a shade darker than your lipstick, and apply color with a brush for even coverage.
