Most-Googled: What Should I Wear to a Funeral?

The Web puts answers to every conundrum at your fingertips, but do you really want to seek fashion and beauty counsel from whoever turns up at the top of the page? In a pioneering collaboration with Google, we quizzed the non-virtual pros for answers on the Internet’s most-searched style stumpers.

It’s one of the most delicate style dilemmas around: after the unfortunate passing of a friend or loved one, you want to select pieces that are both appropriate and respectful when the time comes to say your final goodbye. The key is to wear something that’s dressed-up enough to show reverence, but subtle enough so that you don’t draw attention to yourself.

Black may be the go-to hue, but other dark shades are also appropriate. “You don’t have to be in head-to-toe black, but don’t be in anything that makes a statement,” says celebrity wardrobe stylist Penny Lovell. Opt for alternatives like deep plums and navies. Always forgo loud colors, bold prints, and splashy jewelry. “If you are wearing a print, make sure that it’s a dark-colored pattern that won’t pop in a crowd,” notes Lovell. Our safe-bet pick? A solid sheath that covers your shoulders, classic pumps, and understated jewelry.
