#HowToWearIt: The Timeless Denim Shirt

In this weekly feature, InStyle’s senior market editor/digital correspondent Dana Avidan-Cohn shares tips and tricks on how to tackle the latest trends. Look for it on What’s Right Now every Friday and try out the trend yourself, then tweet your look using #HowToWearIt.

In a world of over-stimulation and a revolving door of trends and styling tricks, it’s nice to have something you can count on—and that something is the denim shirt.

It solves any weekend dressing dilemma and looks good with just about everything in your closet. Whether it’s your favorite vintage find or brand new purchase, you are never going to regret adding one more denim shirt to your life. It’s just as timeless now as it was when Charlotte Rampling wore one in the 1974 film Caravan to Vaccarès (above).

What does change, of course, is how to style it. These days I am looking for denim shirts that are a bit more tailored. Finding one that hits at the waist makes it easier to wear with a longer skirt, à la Jamie Chung (below), or cream crop wide leg pant like Miranda Kerr did (below, at bottom). A more classic shape works tied around the waist of a dress or monochromatic top and pant. It’s also the perfect piece to pack for a summer weekend since it can double as a cover-up. To wear the trend now, read on to shop and recreate Chung’s and Kerr’s looks.
