The Mindy Project Is Back, and the Clothes Are Just as Fabulous as Ever! Get the Scoop

The Mindy Project is back! After months of withdrawal, the hilarious comedy returned last night for season 3, and while we’re still giggling about “Diamond Dan,” Danny Castellano’s (Chris Messina) stripper alter ego, we also can’t stop talking about Dr. Mindy Lahiri’s (Mindy Kaling) many colorful outfit changes.

Like the previous seasons, we saw lots of bold hues and impeccably tailored ensembles, but that doesn’t mean that costume designer Salvador Perez and Kaling aren’t planning to mix it up. “I think Mindy sort of felt that we were sort of stuck in our rhythm,” Perez tells InStyle. “As fashion evolves, we want the character’s style to evolve, too.” That means fewer sweaters and more menswear-inspired pieces like blazers and vests, albeit in feminine fabrics. “It has to have a little feminine detail or it’s Annie Hall!”

Case in point: The camel blazer Perez paired with a bright red-orange top and a turquoise skirt. “Normally we would never use a dull camel coat, but over a color block look it made sense,” he explains.

The parade of bold color continued with the black, yellow, and white geometric Misook dress (above) she wore. However, what caught our eye the most about the ensemble were the statement BaubleBar earrings from his upcoming collection (available October 7) that Perez paired with the look. “You’ll see us pulling a pop of color from her outfit and using the elements for the accessories like earrings, shoes, and bags a lot.”

Bold bejeweled elements were seen again in the episode, during the charity party scene.

Originally intended for the Empire State Building scene in last season’s finale, Perez and Kaling decided to use the dress (below) for this episode instead. “We had the dress, and I know that it’s a little bit luxe, but it’s spectacular,” says Perez. “If you’re going to confront your boyfriend about being a stripper, you want to be fabulously dressed.” Amen to that!

We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week!

Catch The Mindy Project every Tuesday at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.
