The Good Wife Work Outfit Inspo of the Week: Rock a New Classic

By: Sharon Clott Kanter

This season, The Good Wifes costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle readers tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.

On last night’s episode of The Good Wife, Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) took on a TV interview and later reconnected with husband Peter (Chris Noth).

For these scenarios and more, costume designer Dan Lawson wanted her to look especially “strong and elegant,” he told us when we caught up with him today. That’s why he chose this black-and-white tweed Karolina Zmarlak jacket (above) for her outfit. “Sometimes revisiting a classic silhouette with a modern sensibility is the way to create a winning look,” Lawson said. “I thought the ’60s-inspired neck was perfect on Julianna. The very clever seaming and off-center gunmetal zipper made her look chic and powerful.”

Your takeaway tip: “Sometimes to be modern you have to take a nod from the classic,” he said of how you can interpret the style yourself. “Wearing a modern take on a classic look can make you the most up-to-date in the room.”
