Prince William and Kate Middleton Visit New York’s September 11 Memorial

New York City’s current conditions—heavy rain—was befitting of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s latest stop on their tour of the Big Apple: the September 11 Memorial.

Tuesday morning, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the solemn site, leaving a bouquet of flowers at the reflecting pools, which are meant to symbolize where the two World Trade Center towers once stood.

With her hair pulled back and wearing a Seraphine maternity dress under her pink Mulberry coat, Middleton and her prince were shielded from the heavy rain and wind with umbrellas as they walked through the memorial. Among the nearly 3,000 who died that day in 2001, 67 were British citizens, the most of any foreign country, reports CBS News. Prince William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited the memorial in July 2010 to open the Queen Elizabeth II September 11 Garden, honoring the lives England lost. “We are thrilled beyond thrilled to have the Duke and Duchess come to visit the memorial and museum,” Joe Daniels, president & CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, told radio station WCBS 880. “It’s an incredible sign that this event and this project has touched the world.”

Will and Kate’s three-day trip—which has had New Yorkers abuzz—has included some more upbeat stops, too. On Monday night, they attended a Brooklyn Nets game (where they met Beyoncé and Jay Z!) and on Sunday, they enjoyed a private dinner at the home of a British advertising mogul in the city’s posh Gramercy Park neighborhood.
