The Best Mix-and-Match Pieces to Step Up Your Off-Duty Style

By: Steffi Lee

It may be Monday, but we’re already looking forward to the weekend. And when it comes to daydreaming about the weekend (you know, aside from the obvious), one of the best parts is not having to dress up in uncomfortable work attire. But that doesn’t mean your weekend uniform should consist solely of sweats and ratty oversize tees from college days. Instead, we pieced together cute and incredibly comfortable pieces for you to mix and match that work for casual brunches, farmers’ market runs, or dog-walks, like Dakota Johnson (celebs—they’re just like us!).

OUTERWEAR

There is nothing more practical-yet-cool than a military jacket or a lightweight linen blazer that pairs well with almost anything. If you have a date night planned, shrug on a luxe leather “denim” jacket with a flirty cotton skirt.

Shop the pieces, from left: Derek Lam 10 Crosby leather jacket, $995; intermixonline.com. H&M cargo jacket, $60; hm.com. Zara linen blazer, $100; zara.com.

DAY DRESSES

Slipping on an easy day dress is probably the quickest way to achieve that effortlessly put-together look. Gravitate toward soft fabrics, like this sky blue silk number or striped tank style, since comfort is still priority, after all.

Shop the pieces, from left: Theory dress, $245; theory.com. Wilfred Bossut dress, $185; aritzia.com. Marc by Marc Jacobs dress, $423; mytheresa.com.

TOPS

To give your weekend look a polished spin, look for structured tops. Channel your inner Parisienne with a short-sleeved Oxford, classic striped shirt, or blush tone sweater—they may be more substantial in weight, but the material is still relaxed.

Shop the pieces, from left: See by Chloe Pleated-sleeves cotton-poplin shirt, $299, matchesfashion.com; Acne Studios Vernina sweatshirt, $289.30, farfetch.com; Play Striped t-shirt, $155, shop.doverstreetmarket.com

BOTTOMS

Not all track pants are created equal—these athleisure modal bottoms look sleek, but they feel like pajamas. If you’re feeling bolder, show off your legs in a denim mini or try a pair of tailored culottes—both are some of this season’s biggest trends.

Shop the pieces, from left: Helmut Lang pants, $255; helmutlang.com. Topshop denim skirt, $52; topshop.com. 3.1 Phillip Lim culottes, $350; kirnazabete.com.

SHOES

During the weekend, there really is no need to step into a pair of stilettos, unless it’s absolutely necessary. These flat options are just as fashionable. Classic Nikes or ballet flats are obvious choices, but try slipping on playful fringe slides—they surprisingly work with a lot of outfits.

Shop the pieces, from top: Tibi slides, $425; tibi.com. Salvatore Ferragamo flats, $496; shopbop.com. Nike sneakers, $155; net-a-porter.com.

HATS & TOTES

Day-old hair can be concealed with a classic Panama hat or baseball cap. And a leather hold-all tote is a definite must-have for errand or grocery runs.

Shop the pieces, from top: J. Crew hat, $58; jcrew.com. Cuyana tote, $150; cuyana.com. Hat Attack cap, $50; hatattack.com.
