Though only one of them plays royalty in Into the Woods, both Emily Blunt and Anna Kendrick looked nothing short of regal at the film’s world premiere last night in New York City. While Blunt played off the drama of her Dolce & Gabbana number, opting for lush lashes and a red ombré pout, Kendrick went the minimalist route with her glowing skin, shimmery shadow, and petal pink lipstick.
Each look can be taken from the red carpet into the real world just as well—just take the intensity down a notch.”The key to turning Anna’s look into a ‘real life’ version is to town everything down,” says Kendrick’s makeup artist Sara Glick. “One of the reasons people tend to go wrong when translating a red carpet look is the heaviness of the skin coverage. Instead of wearing full foundation and concealer, just lightly cover any spots and under the eye.”
Blunt’s makeup artist Jenn Streicher echoed the statement. “I think that a lot of people relate to Emily because we always keep her looks quite classy—she never really goes with something because it’s ‘on trend,’ like an electric blue shadow” she tells InStyle. “My suggestion is to leave the fly-by-night beauty statements aside, and keep with the classic looks.” Both Streicher and Glick gave InStyle the full breakdown on how you can recreate each star’s gorgeous makeup. “I was inspired by Emily’s Dolce & Gabbana statement dress, which was sexy and elegant,” Streicher says. “I was really into the ombré lip look—I think it’s really fun, and looks great on the red carpet.” After setting a flawless canvas, the pro swept Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick in Rose Gold ($28; lauramercier.com) over Blunt’s lids as a base, then picked up the Amethyst hue and blended it into the lash line.
With the Laura Mercier Creme Eye Liner in Noir ($24; lauramercier.com), Streicher used a liner brush to apply the product at the base of the lashes, and extended the line out into a dramatic flick. A generous amount of mascara finished the eye, and Streicher then moved on to the ombré lip.
“I have really enjoyed creating this look,” she says. “I layered a couple of different lip colors, added a pop of color in the middle, and used dark liner on the outside.” A layer of the Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Color in Plumberry ($27; lauramercier.com) acted as the base color, and the lip pencil in Ruby ($23; lauramercier.com) was used around the perimeter to create depth. Finally, Streicher added the Creme Smooth Lip Color in Hollywood ($27; lauramercier.com) at the very center of Blunt’s lips for a pop of color. “If you’re doing this as an everyday look, the only thing I would change is to take the lip down a bit, as it’s a little intense,” she advises. “However, I think it would be perfect for a holiday party or festive occasion!”

Alternately, Kendrick’s look held a more natural vibe. Glick applied a sweep of the Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Color in Soft Iris ($23; lauramercier.com) to give Kendrick’s complexion a rosy flush, directing the product upwards toward the hairline. “This is a simple and easy way to bring out the natural curves of the face without looking too bronze,” she says. “Anna’s skin is porcelain and fair, therefore, just a small amount beautifully complemented her tone.”
With a handful of the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colors ($28 each; lauramercier.com), Glick applied Seashell on the inner corners as a highlight, then used Rosegold on the lids, continuing the color on the lower lash line. She then blended Plum into the crease, and finished with a strike of the Creme Eye Liner in Noir ($24; lauramercier.com).
“By pressing a creme liner into the lash line, I was able to create the illusion of a fuller lash—something mascara cannot do alone,” she says. “By hiding the line in the lashes, you are able to get a fuller effect without fussing with the whole ‘cat eye’ thing. It’s a foolproof way to boost your mascara game.” The Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Color in Silk ($25; lauramercier.com) mirrored Kendrick’s own lip color and balanced the sparkly eye.
